Calico is excited to present a brand new body of work by Jennifer Caviola. The artist is known for both figurative and abstract works which are, at their centers, odes to painting. Throughout her work Caviola seeks to study and utilize color, linework, geometry, painting, drawing, and gilding. Each piece translates biographies and interpretations of states of being through various versions of abstraction and portraiture transcribed onto wood panels and pieces of paper.
For her solo exhibit, Continued Condition, Caviola brings her newest paintings to Calico which seek to dismantle and transpose multiple elements of the module grid to create complicated visual documentation of origin, movement, and destination. With help from the history of each painting - revealed by ritualized sanding - the paintings are constructed upon previous layers of work to form a sense of time, space, and memory. These compositions graciously provide ample opportunity for creating thrilling color relations and complex overlapping of lines and forms.
Jennifer Caviola received her BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 2002 and her MFA from Parsons in New York City in 2007. She has had solo shows in New York City, Brooklyn, and California, and has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. She has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Cultured Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Complex Magazine, Papermag, Juxtapoz, and High Fructose.
Please join us on Friday, May 12, 7-9pm, for the opening reception of Continued Condition.
