“Earthbound” can be defined as being firmly set in or attached to the earth, limited to the earth or its surface, or having only earthly interests.

Calico is pleased to present Being Earthbound, a solo exhibition of recent works by Kate Nielsen. Inspired by her interests in earth sciences, metaphysics, and consciousness, Nielsen is known for her unique approach to painting. Her process involves a building-up of layers of paint onto sheets of glass that are then peeled, cut, and reincorporated into new forms. The results are meditations on the accumulation of layers and the excavation of materials, harnessing complexity, and finding simplicity within chaos. Viewers may find that Nielsen’s paintings conjure ideas of geological extremities, microscopic biology, and cosmic otherworldliness.

Kate Nielsen is a painter and illustrator living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, and her work has been featured at the Strohl Art Center, Nha Minh, Present Company, and The Museum of Art and Design, among others.

Being Earthbound is Nielsen’s first solo exhibition with Calico.

Please join us for the opening reception of Being Earthbound on Friday, March 17, 7-9pm.
